Artist Statement

My name is Sofia Kyrillidi, and I am a 20-year-old artist based in Athens, Greece. Currently in my second year at the Athens School of Fine Arts, I am deeply immersed in the process of oil painting on canvas. I find this medium to be the most effective way to explore new techniques and approaches to my artistic practice.

My work is the result of ongoing experimentation. I often draw inspiration from a multitude of sources that overlap in the moment. Having grown up in the small village of Elassona, the transition to Athens has been both challenging and transformative. The contrasts between these two environments, alongside my personal experiences, have become key elements in my artistic exploration.

At present, I am particularly focused on the art of the 20th century. In the context of my studies, I engage deeply with the theories and practices of artists from this era, examining how their approaches to art-making can inform and shape my own. I am currently conducting a research project on facial structure and movement, as I strive to capture and express emotion through my work.

Color plays a significant role in my practice, and I often explore its impact on the viewer’s emotional response to the work. Through my art, I aim to bridge the past and present, incorporating both traditional techniques and contemporary expressions to communicate the complexity of human emotion.

Artist Statement (DE)

Meine Arbeit ist das Ergebnis kontinuierlicher Experimente. Ich lasse mich oft von einer Vielzahl von Quellen inspirieren, die sich im Moment überschneiden. Aufgewachsen im kleinen Dorf Elassona, war der Umzug nach Athen sowohl herausfordernd als auch prägend. Die Kontraste zwischen diesen beiden Umgebungen sind neben meinen persönlichen Erfahrungen zu Schlüsselelementen meiner künstlerischen Auseinandersetzung geworden.

Derzeit konzentriere ich mich besonders auf die Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts. Im Rahmen meines Studiums beschäftige ich mich intensiv mit den Theorien und Praktiken von Künstlern dieser Epoche und untersuche, wie ihre künstlerischen Herangehensweisen meine eigene beeinflussen und prägen können. Derzeit führe ich ein Forschungsprojekt zu Gesichtsstruktur und -bewegung durch, um Emotionen in meiner Arbeit einzufangen und auszudrücken.

Farbe spielt in meiner Arbeit eine bedeutende Rolle, und ich untersuche oft ihren Einfluss auf die emotionale Reaktion des Betrachters auf das Werk. Mit meiner Kunst möchte ich eine Brücke zwischen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart schlagen und dabei sowohl traditionelle Techniken als auch zeitgenössische Ausdrucksformen einbeziehen, um die Komplexität menschlicher Emotionen zu vermitteln.
